Tropo Nashville<=>Milwaukee

Post by w9wi »

(Hey Chris!)

Pretty intense tropo across the Midwest tonight. The long-haul stuff is all east-west (Toronto<=>Kansas City...) but there's some north-south going on too. Unstable.

Just before midnight I was thinking "that adcon station on 99.1 is pretty darned loud. Wouldn't it be weird if it was WMYX? -- but I'm sure it's that pest in Kentucky."

Then midnight hit... time for the legal ID... "WMYX Milwaukee" (?!) Too floored to start the recorder.....

Ended up landing three Milwaukee stations (WMYX, WZTR, WKLH); one from Appleton (WAPL, of course); and two from da U.P.! (WIMK & WJNR)

The 95.7 station was promptly IDd when I heard Gordon Hinckley doing an ad for a funeral home chain...

Band is still open at 2am but I've gotta work tomorrow... (trying to figure out why a Nielsen box won't tolerate the output of a HD=>SD downconverter...)

It should be "that 99.1 sounds really freakin' awesome. They must have a top-notch Engineer!"

I figured that went without saying!

Never did get your station recorded but I do have recordings of some of the other stations on http://www.wtfda.info/showthread.php?t=3579.

(heck, the U.P. was rare DX when I lived in Madison!)

Someday I'll have to try to snag a recording of WSSP. Haven't tried since it switched from WEMP but it used to come in once a week or so.

WOLX is one heck of a signal. (it also sounds pretty darned good these days, just wish I liked the format :) ) I've heard it at least four times here.

Does pretty well over towards Milwaukee (as I'm sure you know!) even without tropo.

Yeah, that is a prime site!

I ran a test with a 50w exciter into the main antenna. I could pick it up with just a little picket-fencing out to about 30 miles!

You know what they say about cheese blowing in the wind...or in that case...the ice blowing in the wind.

I was actually still working in radio when the WOLX tower collapse happened....Hadn't Woodward just taken it over? I thought I remember some dispute over who's fault it was that the tower failed.

Yep. I was looking through the paperwork not that long ago. I didn't look to see if Shockley or Woodward's insurance ended up footing the bill.
