We're being told its more for live cut-ins, breaking news and weekends but I won't really know what's going on until I've finished installing and commissioning it

Probably. The station I was at had OD controlling switcher, playout server (Avid), graphics (Ross XPression), audio, routing, and cameras. Oh and one Op was supposed to make sure everything went ok. No AD, no PA, nothing. Not even a floor manager or prompter operator.

Our station uses Grass Valley Ignite controlling the same list of gear you mention. (graphics is VizRT) We do have a prompter operator,* and during some shows an assistant director and floor manager.

I have been happily surprised by the quality of the shows. I honestly believe the quality (in terms of human error) of the shows has improved.

It did of course cost the jobs of camera and audio operators.

* Years ago, long before production automation, we tried having the talent run their own prompter. It failed miserably.

I swear I've seen somewhere that stations are having the talent run their prompters again.
What's that do....?

I know of a few stations that are doing their own prompting.

One has a prompter operator for some of the newscasts. The more experienced anchors do their own prompting via a mouse scroll wheel.

The other station uses some sort of petal contraption under the desk the anchors use to control the speed of the prompter. I've never seen that one in person, just have heard about it.

Both stations I was at had the foot pedals under the desk. Each of them, btw, had a wheel at the producer station for backup or like for when the anchor is doing an interview or something and isn't at the desk.
