We'd heard from a couple of internal sources on Friday that Qualcomm was pulling the plug on the ill-fated FLO TV direct-to-consumer service, and now we've reason to believe that the deed is in fact done.

They bought channel 55...actually paid the NTSC stations on the channel to convert early. It was a bad business model though...who wants to pay another $15/mo to watch TV on a proprietary device that costs another $200...and isn't in every market?

The spectrum itself is worth far more than the business they were trying to do on it, and Qualcomm is not a programmer anyway.

The idea behind it is good, but everything Mark said is dead on accurate.

They spent a TON of money on the infastructure. Hopefully someone is able to expand on it, using a better buisness model (Hopefull Verizon and not at&t)

Hopefully someone convinces them to allow Channel 55 for wireless mics.... Seriously, they think 12 wireless mic channels in each market is enough? I remember having discussions with the campus folks back in college about wireless mics and how much of a headache it was to coordinate them then... I doubt they could deal with 30 channels yet alone 12.
