UHF power bill...

Postby ajstriker » Wed Apr 01, 2009 4:20 pm

I have a question that maybe Necrat or someone else at a TV station can answer me. On a higher frequency UHF station, with analog still running, what is the typical power usage (from the electric company) in Megawatts for that UHF transmitter building? How about the power bill for the month?

Thanks in advance..

There is a UHF analog that just shut down here in the Raleigh area..... they had about a $12,000 per month electric bill.

I remember when Harris in Quincy, IL built a 220kw UHF TV xmttr, but couldn't get enough power from the power company to run it anywhere near full power. There was some scuttlebutt that it would have consumed so much power that Quincy would have "gone dark"!

That might not have been a bad thing - but then I tend to be a tad sarcastic.

If I remember right the WAND (channel 17, Decatur, IL) transmitter was a 220 KW Harris. That was 30 years ago and I was over there when a 1978 ice storm brought down the tower, but I am pretty sure about the power level. Power into that building was very impressive.
