Controlling Burk ARC-1 w/ Cell Phone?

Postby duckfan98 » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:17 pm

Does anyone have any experience using a cellphone to landline type converter to connect / control and ARC-16? We want to utilized a prepaid cellphone up at the transmitter site, and somehow connect it to the telephone line conection on the BURK. Will this work?

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what sort of converter I would need to take a cell phone, and interface it will the voice control card on the Burk?

Thanks!

Check your email. What you are looking for is a "fixed wireless terminal". It presents a POTS interface which will work with the Burk.

Note that any cellphone, and especially prepaids, may have terms, whether technically imposed or otherwise, which will preclude a circuit staying nailed up. Not clear to me whether you need that or not, but I thought I'd point it out.

Why would you need that (a "nailed-up" line) for an ARC-16 or any dial-up remote control that calls out occasionally but most usage is inbound calls for meter readings and control functions that last only a minute or so?

Cause I wasn't familiar with the piece. I would've thought that was obvious from my phrasing.

Then why reply?

The Burk ARC-16 may be one of the most ubiquitous broadcast remote controls ever built, and it's been around for a couple of decades at least.

Deep -

So I picked up a fixed wireless terminal off fea-bay. Now, all I need I supposed is a prepaid sim card for it to work. How easy are the ARC-16's to 'reset'? Meaning, clear the memory so we can start fresh. As you know we picked up a few of them from the equipment lot we purchased, but they are all pre programmed with the old stations presets.

If I recall correctly, pressing and holding both channel select buttons while applying AC power will completely wipe the memory and reset the unit.

All of the relevant Burk ARC16 manuals are available for download at their website, or you can call them and they'll walk you through it.

The procedure outlined in the previous DOES NOT ERASE the memory. It allows you to get into the setup mode to re-program the steps necessary to configure it. The book should cover what you need to do. It isn't difficult, and is a breeze compared to the Gentner VRC 1OOO/2OOO.
