This can lead to a whole new discussion.
I would say to get your station right on top of the offending one.
Beating is much worse than background audio.

Beating is much worse than background audio.

It does work really good. I know of several stations that do this on purpose. Even know of a syncro AM that's offset. I liken its effect to the capture ratio of FM. It masks the offending stations audio to a point. By the time the beating is offensive your at nearly 50/50 signal ratios and unlistenable anyway.

By introducing even more noise!
I liken its effect to trying to prevent a pirate radio station from interfering with a licensed station by jamming the pirate station.

In other words, you mask the offending audio by drowning it out with louder "noise" audio.

Nope. That's not how it sounds. Doesn't add any more "noise" unless you're an elephant that can hear/feel 4 Hz.
It does mask. That’s the whole point of it.

Ever tried it?

Doing what you suggest is actually drowning out the offending audio by creating noise which is louder than their audio.
The rapid fading in and out, up and down, back and forth, day in and day out, for months, for years, forever, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, as an ancient Chinese torture method, when will it stop? Stop it now, please, I can't take it, I am going crazyer! :P

Wish I was still working with a station that had co-channel interference. I'd give that a try.

Wonder if I should try it with our 50K here.

There is a certain co-channel station which sometimes "forgets" to reduce power/change pattern at the appointed time in the evenings (*cough WCNN cough*) and causes interference to many of our listeners. Unfortunately, the signal ratios are probably such that it might make things worse for folks in our skywave area.

When the ratios start to get close it's really a lost cause no matter what you do.
But when you're in the 50 mV/m and you can plainly hear music from the interfering station fading up & down at a 1/2 cycle rate, it does work. Get out to the 5 mV/m and it's a lost cause.

Could use that down in Fayetteville!

Your buddies in Atlanta have been better these days.

I have to admit, my trip odometer is in sync with the main odometer, all my clocks are kept to within a fraction of a second of each other, and The Tick is my favorite radio station.
I trace this back to my childhood when my dad left the room during a presidential address and I turned the TV volume down and the radio volume up creating a slight mismatch between the picture and the sound. When he learned what I had done, he instilled in me the importance of synchronization which will follow me into the grave!
