From omaha.com:

Omaha gets urban talk radio station

By Wes Taylor
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

A new voice can be heard in north Omaha. WONE 1710 AM hit the air this week.

“The One” is a black-owned local radio station with an urban talk and news format.

The station’s goal is to be community-based, allowing people to share their thoughts, talents and opinions.

“There’s a Bible verse, I think Hosea 4:6, that says, ‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge,’ ” said the station’s founder and owner, William King.

“I think this station can help to change that here in Omaha.”

Although the station currently has a limited transmission range, from about 48th to 78th Streets and Sorensen Parkway to the Northwest Radial, King said that within two to four weeks coverage will reach all of north Omaha, midtown and downtown.

King said he welcomes contributions from all community members, whether they are former engineers who can help with station logistics or musicians who hope to find an audience.

“Omaha does have a voice, and we’re trying to build that voice, and we need everyone’s help to do it,” King said

He can be reached at 402-714-6482.

Of course those of us that have lived in the Midwest are familiar with the LEGAL WONE in Dayton...

Yeah, and they had to pick a set of calls that are owned by a Clear Channel station - nothing like going all the way with it! I'm assuming that a part 15 AM wouldn't cover the several square miles they claim to cover now, let alone the fifty-odd square miles that make up the northern half of the city, which they claim to be covering in 2-4 weeks...

Best,

Jeff

There are synchronous part 15 networks out there now that the technology necessary to pull it off is rather inexpensive.

And as a practical note, calling people trying to do something positive in their community "idiots" is crude and unprofessional. Too bad one of those dead and dying AMs we hear so much chatter about couldn't step up to the plate and help them do it right.

While I wouldn't use the word idiots, selecting a call sign that is already in use is not the best idea, even if they purposely chose a W call to avoid potential mixups with any local stations. Remembering that the COMBINED LENGTH of the antenna and ground lead can't exceed 3 metres (10 feet), I think it would take quite a few LEGALLY installed Rangemasters to cover the area these folks are claiming to cover. I emphasize legally, because even on their own website Rangemaster claims the transmitters can be installed on buildings - and that just is not true, according to the letter of the law.

I don't disagree that the motive is pure, just that some research into the legal aspects might have been well placed. Clear Channel just donated 4 AM's to the MMTC (Minority Media and Telecommunications Council), so it's not like they haven't made at least some effort. Hopefully the folks in Omaha will get hold of a legal signal to work with and do it up right, rather than pirating existing calls.

Best,

Jeff

The reason I said idiots is because he gave out his phone number.

I don't think they are broadcasting. Our studios are within this area where one supposedly can hear them, I don't and when driving around the area I don't hear them ether. I'm sure it will come up in discussion at today's SBE meeting....
