Doesn't fit in a category? It does now.

Some of them already did, such as the two Smart-UPS 1400 units that I have in service. If the batteris swell up, though, the tray will usually jam, necessitating partial disassembly of the unit to change the batteries. I change mine every 3 years to prevent battery failure (I use Power-Sonic replacement gel cells), and I post the replacement date on each unit.

I've used the batteries from Tempest with good luck. What causes the "full throttle shut down" effect of them? Is it the circuit inside that goes into a weird protect mode? Could the battery being dead, be the reason for them to shut down so hard?

I generally use Panasonic or Yuasa batteries purchased from Digikey or Mouser, depending on the model -- and tend to do an exact match to the original battery that was shipped with the unit. It wouldn't surprise me if trying to charge a failing battery damages the charging circuit, leading to overcharging the replacement, hastening its death.

The battery that is in it is the original stock battery.
